painted on location in thermopolis, wyoming over the fall of 2024 for a Plein Air at the Parks event. I’ve always adored this ancient, retired, hot spring belly button and am happy to have painted it in my own interpretation. thermopolis was once a frequent stomping ground for me and with no shortage of striking landscape characters to focus on. this feature has a few other names that locals shared.. ‘Green Eye’… ‘Big Joe’… and something about an owl’s anus. it’s a neat portal, regardless. always searching for the older names, too. en plein air is french for in the open air and is the expression for painting outdoors with the subject in view.
